Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Stable and feature-rich IPv4 router and firewall!

Wish it had IPv6!

Greetings and may Sudo execute your every elevated command!

Jokes aside ;)P , IPFire works very well using a old Intel duo core laptop /w 2GB's of DDR2 Ram (Old 2005 Sony laptop) and a USB Ethernet adapter in a RED + GREEN configuration with a Linksys AC WiFi router in BRIDGE MODE as the wireless access point. I purposelessly picked a access point because of the limited WiFi devices supported at the moment for the RED + GREEN + BLUE. They named the WiFi network BLUE because of the color of the sky.
I agree with others about the learning curb for firewall rules, but once you get it down it is very practical and easy to deploy a rule to a single computer or a group of computers you assign!
No issues using OpenVPN in site-to-site and road warrior vpn configurations.

IPFire is just a well thought out application and is worth your examination.

I have been using IPFire for a while now, and it is an excellent firewall/router with a very good set of developers who are constantly updating to fix security issues and add new features.

For the family, this is a very good choice with the ability to restrict web site content for children. For the business, it has most of the things needed, including site-to-site and road warrior vpn (both OpenVPN and IPSec), DHCP with sticky (reserved) IP's, and two part WiFi security levels to keep WiFi users from accessing the LAN without authorization.

I use this at my daughters house to protect my grandchildren, and also at several small businesses who are clients to secure their networks.

Very active community, so if you ask a question, you will get a response rapidly.
